The Kia Niro is a compact crossover designed for electrification from the start: it was never sold as a diesel or a petrol-only car. You'll find it as a full hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric model (first sold as the e-Niro). The first generation ran from 2016 to 2022; the second arrived in 2022 with bolder styling.
The hybrid suits you if you mostly drive in town and can't charge. The plug-in hybrid makes sense if you can plug in every day. The electric version is for regular trips, with a charger at home or at work. Every version gets into the low-emission zones of Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent without trouble.
For a plug-in hybrid or an electric Niro, the battery is what matters most. Since 2024 the Car-Pass can show its state of health when the data is available, so look at it first. Kia also covers its cars for 7 years or 150,000 km, transferable if the car was serviced on schedule.
Before you buy, check:
- battery health on the Car-Pass, and the range shown after a full charge;
- that the charging cables supplied with the car are there;
- the service invoices, to keep the manufacturer's warranty;
- a test drive of at least 20 minutes, including a fast road.
A well-kept Niro is an easy way into electrified driving.
