The Kia Sportage is a compact family SUV and a very common sight in Belgium. It has room for four adults, a large boot and a high driving position. Used, you can choose between the fourth generation (2016 to 2021) and the fifth, launched in early 2022, which is more modern and more electrified.

The fourth generation offers 1.6 GDi and 1.6 T-GDi petrol engines and several CRDi diesels, with mild-hybrid assistance on some later versions. The fifth adds a full hybrid and a plug-in hybrid alongside petrol and diesel. All-wheel drive is available on part of the range, useful if you tow a caravan or live in the Ardennes.

Many Sportages were company cars before reaching the used market. That's often a good sign: servicing done at the dealer, with invoices. Keep Kia's 7-year or 150,000 km warranty in mind too; it transfers to the next owner if the service schedule was followed.

Before you buy, check:

  • the Euro standard of a diesel: Euro 5 is banned in Brussels;
  • battery health on the Car-Pass for a plug-in hybrid;
  • the tow bar and the clutch if the car has done a lot of towing;
  • a 20-minute test drive in town and on a fast road, starting from a cold engine.
