The Kia Stonic is a small urban SUV based on the Rio. It gives you a slightly higher driving position than a city car without the bulk of a large SUV. It suits a couple, a young driver or anyone who mostly drives in town and the suburbs. It was launched in 2017 and facelifted in 2020.
Most cars run on petrol with the 1.0 T-GDi turbo, which gained mild-hybrid assistance after the facelift. Early years also had non-turbo petrol engines and a rarer 1.6 CRDi diesel. The Stonic is front-wheel drive only: it's not a 4x4, it's a raised city car.
A recent Stonic may still be covered by Kia's 7-year or 150,000 km warranty, provided it was serviced to the manufacturer's schedule. Ask for the service book and invoices, and check the date of first registration on the registration certificate.
Before you buy, check:
- a Car-Pass less than two months old, verified with the QR code;
- the Euro standard if it's a diesel and you drive in Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent;
- the gear changes if it has an automatic gearbox;
- the wheels and lower bumpers, often scuffed by kerbs.
Simple, frugal and easy to park: the Stonic is a safe choice when its history is clear.
