The Volkswagen Polo is a versatile supermini, bigger and more grown-up than a small city car. It works as a first car, for a couple, or for someone who mixes town and motorway driving. Used, you'll find the Polo 5 (up to 2017) and above all the Polo 6, launched in 2017 and facelifted in 2021, which is noticeably roomier.
Petrol engines dominate: a non-turbo 1.0 for town, the more versatile 1.0 TSI turbo, and the GTI if you want some character. TDI diesels exist mainly in older years. Manual or DSG automatic depending on the version.
The Polo has a reputation as a serious small car and holds its value well. The flip side is that used prices stay high. Always compare with cars of the same year, same engine and similar mileage, in your region.
Before you buy, check:
- a Car-Pass less than two months old, verified with its QR code;
- the Euro standard of a diesel Polo if you drive in Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent;
- how the DSG gearbox behaves at low speed during the test drive;
- tyre and brake wear, and any parking damage;
- an insurance quote, especially for a GTI and a young driver.
A well-maintained Polo can last you a long time, so ask for the invoices before you travel.
