A plug-in hybrid SUV lets you drive short trips on electricity and head off on long journeys without thinking about charging. It's a good fit if you can plug in at home or at work and your daily trips stay short. You keep the space and high driving position of an SUV.

One caveat: a plug-in hybrid that never gets charged uses more fuel than a regular petrol car, since it carries a battery and two motors around. Be honest with yourself about your habits before you buy.

What to check before you buy

  • The battery. The Car-Pass shows battery health for plug-in hybrids when the data is available. Ask for a Car-Pass under two months old and check it with the QR code.
  • Servicing of both powertrains. The combustion engine needs the same maintenance as on any other car. Ask for the service book and invoices.
  • The charging cable. Check that it comes with the car and is in good condition.
  • The Euro standard. It's on the Car-Pass and matters for the low emission zones in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent.

On the test drive, drive for at least 20 minutes. Try the electric mode, then the switch to the combustion engine: it should happen without any jolt. If the seller refuses a test drive, walk away.
