An LPG car runs on liquefied petroleum gas as well as petrol. LPG is cheaper at the pump than petrol, which makes it worth a look if you drive a lot and want to keep a petrol engine. When the gas tank runs dry, you simply carry on on petrol.

There are a few trade-offs. The gas tank often takes the place of the spare wheel or part of the boot. Not every filling station sells LPG, so find the ones on your usual routes. And the installation needs regular follow-up.

What to check before you buy

  • The installation's inspection. In Belgium, an LPG installation is inspected every year. Check that the inspection is up to date.
  • The paperwork. Ask for the installation documents and service invoices. An aftermarket installation must have been fitted by an approved professional.
  • The switch from petrol to LPG. On the test drive, the car should switch over without any jolt and run smoothly on both fuels.
  • The Car-Pass. Under two months old and checked with its QR code, including the Euro standard for low emission zones.

Take a test drive of at least 20 minutes, in town and on a fast road. A well-maintained LPG installation lasts a long time. A neglected one is best left with the seller.
