A hybrid car (the non plug-in kind) pairs a petrol engine with a small electric motor. The battery charges itself, when you brake and as you drive. There's nothing to plug in. It's a good solution if you drive a lot in town and in traffic jams, exactly where a hybrid uses the least fuel.

On the motorway, the advantage shrinks: the petrol engine does most of the work. If you mainly drive long, fast trips, compare it with a regular petrol car. Most hybrids have an automatic gearbox, which makes city driving very relaxed.

What to check before you buy

  • Servicing. Ask for the service book and invoices. The hybrid system should have been maintained according to the manufacturer's schedule.
  • The battery warranty. Some manufacturers cover the hybrid battery for longer than the rest of the car. Ask how much is left and under what conditions.
  • Dashboard warning lights. None should stay on after start-up.
  • The Car-Pass. Under two months old and checked with its QR code.

During a test drive of at least 20 minutes, check that the car pulls away on electricity at low speed and that the petrol engine takes over smoothly. A recent petrol hybrid generally gets into low emission zones without trouble, but always check the Euro standard.
