Used convertibles

A convertible is the ultimate fun car. In Belgium you won't drive with the top down all year, but the sunny days are enough to make it a second car that puts a smile on your face. Some models also work perfectly well every day with the roof up.

There are two main families: the fabric soft top and the folding hard top. Fabric is lighter and simpler. A hard top insulates better against noise and cold, but its mechanism is more complex. Either way, the boot is often smaller with the roof folded away.

What to check before you buy

  • The roof. Open and close it several times. It should work without odd noises or sticking.
  • Water tightness. Look for signs of damp: wet carpets, a musty smell, condensation that won't clear. Check the seals.
  • The fabric. No tears, no failing seams, a clear rear window.
  • The Car-Pass. Under two months old and checked with its QR code.

Take a test drive of at least 20 minutes, first with the roof closed, then open. Listen for wind noise and rattles. Get an insurance quote before you buy: a powerful convertible can be expensive to insure, especially for a young driver. And ask the seller where the car was kept.
