Used Audi A1

The Audi A1 is a premium small car: Polo-sized, with Audi's finish and image. It suits people who mostly drive in town but want a well-made interior. Used, there are two generations: the first (2010 to 2018), as a three-door or five-door Sportback, and the second, launched in 2018, which is five-door Sportback only and roomier.

The first generation offers TFSI petrol and TDI diesel engines. The second is petrol only, with engines from 1.0 to 2.0 TFSI and a manual or S tronic automatic gearbox. A raised version, the A1 citycarver, was also sold.

An A1 costs more than a mainstream small car of the same age, especially with options. Compare like for like, and check what's actually fitted to the car rather than trusting the listing.

Before you buy, check:

• a Car-Pass less than two months old, verified with its QR code;
• the Euro standard of a first-generation diesel A1 if you drive in Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent;
• how the S tronic gearbox behaves at low speed during the test drive;
• the wheels, often large and exposed to kerbs;
• an insurance quote, especially for a powerful version and a young driver.
